It’s March

March is by far my least favorite month of the year. I get a little depressed, a little bored and a little impatient with it all. The snow is dirty, the air is damp. It’s cold, it warms up, it’s cold again. March can’t make up it’s mind and it bugs me.

We got some fresh snow. About eight inches. It cleans up that dirty stuff a bit which is good, but it’s March. Aren’t the daffodils supposed to be popping out by now?

There’s a nice little treasury in Etsy that makes me feel a little better about this time of year. The curator names it Blackberry Winter. The purple colors remind me of winter and spring all at once. They make March less annoying. I’m honored to have my Blackberry Sage candle featured in the collection.

Monday

You know how Mondays can be. I had a hard time leaving the weekend for another five-day work week. It was a weekend filled with satisfying housekeeping, festive party-going, and relaxing leisure. How can one be expected to return to the dull beige of government employment after the color and festivity of a Mardi Gras/birthday party?

The day was cold and damp, the streets and sidewalks were covered with slush and ice. A coworker spent a lot of time venting to me about the stupidity of a new program we’re using, instead of telling someone who could do something about it. Not only that, after the day job I spent an hour in a cold car dealership waiting for routine maintenance to be done on the Space Pod. All in all it was a very dreary day.

When I got home Husby had a cozy fire burning in the fireplace and supper ready for us. The crackle and glow of the fire and the delicious meal made me forget all about the discomforts of the day, and after the fire died down I went to bed early to embark on a new book.

It turned out to be a pretty good Monday after all.

Decision Time At The Auntie B’s Wax World Headquarters

It’s a chilly 2 degrees F today, with a windchill of -17. Do people in Hawaii even know what a windchill factor is? Suffice it to say we’re having weather fit for perfect preservation.

The missing link, preserved in a block of ice. Apparently.

With such bone-chilling weather it’s hard to imagine that in a few short months I will be outside doing summer shows and festivals, selling my wares. As a matter of fact I’ve already received two applications. One of the shows I’ve decided to bypass, but the other leaves me on the fence and riddled with anxiety over the decision to apply or not. My gut says pass it up, but my head says take a chance.

I was up late last night, scrolling through a list of craft fairs and festivals to take place in Wisconsin this summer. Why do I favor Wisconsin shows more than my own home state of Minnesota? Well, for one thing when I do a show in a different state it’s like I’m having a working vacation. For another thing Wisconsin has a smaller sales tax than Minnesota, which is nice when it comes to filing a sales tax return.

Now is the time of year I have to make some decisions. Business decisions. It makes me feel like such a grown-up, and I don’t know if that’s a good thing or not. I’m waiting patiently for a copy of Midwest Art Fairs to arrive at my house so I can really dig into the festival scene and schedule my summer travels from one craft show to another, to another…

Don’t forget, a schedule of my travels will appear in the 2013 Events page. It’s empty now, but not for long. I hope.

Toasty Warm On A Frigid Day

How are you all on this lovely Monday? Things couldn’t be better at the Auntie B’s Wax World Headquarters. I’ve been away from the day job since Thursday afternoon and this long weekend has been spent gloriously. So many things accomplished! So much well-deserved rest! Tomorrow I return to the day job, but I’m not going to think about that right now.

An interesting thing about this weekend ~ I didn’t turn on the computer for two whole days! I know, for some of you that may seem like nothing. Others may wonder, how did she do it? For one thing I’ve noticed my right (mousing) wrist is a little painful. I didn’t avoid the computer for that reason, but I’m sure my delicate wrist appreciates the vacation it got. For another thing, I found plenty of other things to do. That’s right, there is a life outside of Facebook and Monkey Gems.

I may be sharing posts about some of the things I’ve been up to. Like what I found when going through three boxes of stuff I nabbed from Husby’s parents’ house when we cleaned it out for sale. Or like what I’ve been thinking about while laying about in bed in the mornings, not having to get up at the crack of dawn (earlier, actually) to go to the day job.

One thing I’ll share with you today is that it’s -6 degrees here at the headquarters in Minnesota. I’m happy to be cozy in my house without any reason to go out into the blistering cold weather. But I’m also happy it’s cold out, because that’s what winter in Minnesota is supposed to be. On icy cold days like this how can one resist baking something sweet and delicious? I know I can’t. So I whipped up a couple of loaves of pear bread. They’re cooling on the racks as I write this, and I can hardly wait to dive in and taste some. The house smells of cinnamon and sugar and juicy, ripe pears.
