It’s a chilly 2 degrees F today, with a windchill of -17. Do people in Hawaii even know what a windchill factor is? Suffice it to say we’re having weather fit for perfect preservation.

The missing link, preserved in a block of ice. Apparently.
With such bone-chilling weather it’s hard to imagine that in a few short months I will be outside doing summer shows and festivals, selling my wares. As a matter of fact I’ve already received two applications. One of the shows I’ve decided to bypass, but the other leaves me on the fence and riddled with anxiety over the decision to apply or not. My gut says pass it up, but my head says take a chance.
I was up late last night, scrolling through a list of craft fairs and festivals to take place in Wisconsin this summer. Why do I favor Wisconsin shows more than my own home state of Minnesota? Well, for one thing when I do a show in a different state it’s like I’m having a working vacation. For another thing Wisconsin has a smaller sales tax than Minnesota, which is nice when it comes to filing a sales tax return.
Now is the time of year I have to make some decisions. Business decisions. It makes me feel like such a grown-up, and I don’t know if that’s a good thing or not. I’m waiting patiently for a copy of Midwest Art Fairs to arrive at my house so I can really dig into the festival scene and schedule my summer travels from one craft show to another, to another…
Don’t forget, a schedule of my travels will appear in the 2013 Events page. It’s empty now, but not for long. I hope.
Stay warm!
It must be hard to be always thinking well ahead of the season you are in so as to anticipate the seasons you need to be prepared for. I can barely prepared for today! Good luck!
And I don’t think people above the Mason Dixon Line know about wind-chill factors…
Yeah Lorna, it is kind of hard. Sometimes I forget I have to think that far ahead and then I fall behind. Luckily I have this brisk weather to keep me alert!
I worked on an archaeological dig one winter on the tropical desert island, Grand Turk, There was always an ocean breeze. They warned us about the wind chill factor: “It will feel like a pleasant 70 degrees, but you are actually working in at least 90 degree heat! Stay hydrated! Wear sunscreen! Pay attention!” So the wind chill is always a factor, but when it’s a warm factor, it’s a pleasure. Another great post Sara, Thanks!
Wow, interesting. I suppose it’s all a matter of how we express that “factor.” To me, your experience would be a pleasant ocean breeze rather than a wind chill factor. But no matter what you call it precautions should be taken.
How cool that you went on an archaeological dig too! How many mummies did you find?! Just kidding. Have you ever written about that on your blog? I’d like to hear about it!
I haven’t, but I’ll keep that in mind for one of those days when I’m scrambling for something to write about. Thanks, Sara!
Come to the Fox Valley area! 🙂 Would be so fun!
There are a few shows during the summer in that area. I’ll have to think about it!
They are really in arts and crafts up here. Very big art community. I’m planning on starting to do decorative wood painting again, and I’m excited.
