At the Auntie B’s Wax World Headquarters springtime poses a bit of a dilemma.  On one hand I love to tackle the spring cleaning chores.  Deep cleaning.  Thorough cleaning.  The kind of cleaning that takes a few weeks to accomplish.  On the other hand a lot of my crafting projects clutter up the house.

Tidiness facilitates cleaning projects, crafting projects thwart tidiness.

I’m in a constant state of conflict trying deciding what should take priority.

For example, creating drink charms involves this…

…and this…

Mr. Henry Hedgehog likes to keep an eye on things.

Luckily the candle creations occur in Craftland, far away from the living spaces I want to deep clean.  Craftland never gets a deep clean, but while wax is cooling in the molds I try to straighten up the area and keep things organized.  Multi-tasking, man.

Creating, tidying and deep cleaning keeps me busy in the spring.  Also kind of makes me mental.  With my shoulder to the wheel those deep cleaning projects will be completed and I’ll feel so accomplished.  Or maybe, as is the case many years, the ammonia, rags and mops will become forgotten before I’ve finished spring cleaning the entire house and my attention will focus on bottle caps, fragrance oils and wicks.

Either way, everything will get done in time.  I hope.

The Perks Of Retirement

This morning I woke up at 6:00 a.m. and my first thought was, “Oh my gosh, I’m late!  I’ll have to call in and request some vacation time, maybe two hours.”  Then I realized I don’t have to report to anyone anymore.  The day job is nonexistent.  So I flipped my pillow, turned to my other side and lay there thinking of the dreams I’d just had.  Of course while trying to recollect those dreams I fell asleep and had yet another dream.  Dreamy mornings are the best.

After some additional slumber I finally got out of bed and started my day.  Craftland needed so much help, so I restocked the shelves with product that was still packed in tubs from the last show I did in…November.  Ack!  After a few hours the product was back on the shelves and the tubs were put away – Craftland was once again fit for production, and so I commenced producing for a few more hours.

Craftland and my cheerleaders

At the end of the day I was grateful for not having to use vacation time at the day job, but mostly for the freedom to spend my time doing things that mean something to me.  Retirement is sinking in, and I’m loving it.

This time of year seems especially boring after the myriad of festivities during the holiday season.  The only thing to think about during these cold days is…taxes.

But wait – doing tax work this time of year makes things less boring for me.  I’ve been getting my business spreadsheets perfected so I can submit the 2015 sales taxes due now, and also submit the numbers to my tax man (Husby).  Comparing income and expenses inspires me to get ready for the 2016 craft season.  I want to organize Craftland.  It’s time to order supplies.  It’s time to build inventory.  It’s a new page in the continuing adventures of Auntie B.

So what if it’s cold outside?  I don’t have to go outside to melt wax.  So what if I’m snowed in?  As long as I have bottle caps I’ll have plenty to do inside.

Taxes?  They’re an inevitable pain.  Winter?  It’s cold and dark and colorless.  Lots of people curse both taxes and wintertime, but both motivate me to get going on a new year of crafting.  I guess that’s what people refer to as the silver lining.

It’s All In My Head

Oh just look at me.

Wait.  On the other hand, don’t look at me.

I’m a loser baby, so why don’t you kill me.

Seems like it’s been ages since I’ve done anything productive ~ in public, that is.  I haven’t been writing on my blog, I haven’t been updating my Etsy shop, I haven’t been filling my calendar with summer craft shows.  What have I been doing, you may ask?

Being a loser!

OK, not really.  I’ve got other people’s situations taking up room in my head.  I’ve got a friend going through a difficult situation with her dad, I’ve got my own dad who’s recovering from a knee replacement, I’ve got another person who’s going through an emotional break-up, I’ve got still another person who’s dipping his toes into the complexities and responsibilities of adulthood.

Then there’s my own stuff in my head.  I’m thinking of ways to spruce up and promote my Etsy shop, I’m preparing to host lovely Mother’s Day brunch this coming weekend, I’m crunching numbers in preparation for an upcoming retirement, I’m tuttering over the novel I started a year and a half ago, I’m stocking retail shops with my products, and I’m getting all pumped (and nervous) about a journey to a foreign land.

It’s all in my head and I have to get it out somehow.

Hey there bloggy friends ~ what’s keeping you from blogging?  I’m pretty sure it’s all in your head.

Years ago when Husby and I were first married we’d spend our Saturday nights watching home improvement shows on HGTV.  Not renovating shows, decorating shows. I also used to watch Martha Stewart and Carol Duval on a regular basis. I loved learning new crafts and new ways to spruce up our home with decorating ideas.

Alas, the thing these days on the home improvement TV stations is demolition and complete renovation, mostly kitchens. Craftiness seems to be a thing of the past on TV, so I often scour the internet trying to find a new crafting site or personality to inspire me.

Thanks to Dana at She Walks Softly I think I’ve found my new inspiration.  Her name is Sue Teller and she could be destined for a fabulous crafting career.

Huh? What do you think? Martha Stewart, look out!
