Sisters

Charlotte and I had a conversation via e-mail today, like we do every day, and it reminded me how lucky I am to have a sister who is also my BFF.

Years ago this time of year we would get to play outside in the snow until after dark.  We didn’t realize dark occurred sooner in the winter than in the summer.  Mom would slide bread bags over our feet and secure them to our legs with rubber bands, then would help us into our snow suits and boots and send us out to the front yard to play.

Me and Charlotte

The street light on the corner would make the snow, which came up to our waists, shimmer like a million diamonds.  We would dig tunnels and roll around until we saw Dad coming down the street, walking home from the bus stop after work.  We’d greet him at the intersection and walk him home, where Mom had some kind of fabulous warm meal for all of us.

I was thinking today how great it is to have someone in your life who shares fifty years of life experiences with you.  Charlotte and I have that.  In the years since we frolicked in the snow after the sun set we’ve been through the usual sibling conflicts, but have grown to develop one of those sisterly relationships you see on a Hallmark movie.  Ack!  It sounds sappy, but I am eternally grateful for the gift of a sister who is also my friend.

Sisterly Bonding

The leaves are starting to turn where I live. The midwest will soon be a blaze of oranges, golds, and reds. The golds have already popped on the parkway I travel every day.

Fall is my favorite time of year, and I don’t think I’m alone in that feeling. The hot, sticky summer turns into a cooler, drier autumn, which makes being outside much more pleasant for me. One of the things I do outdoors during the summer and fall is play tennis with Charlotte once a week.

We meet at the P & C tennis courts, easy to get to from both of our houses.  I like playing in the fall because quite frankly I think I’m getting too old to be exerting that much energy in the extremely hot temperatures summer can bring.  Plus, playing in the fall season reminds me of when Charlotte and I both used to play on the high school tennis team, which was a fall sport.

Oh yes, Charlotte and I both look like this, running and leaping like stags.

Our high school tennis coach died not too long ago, but I bet he’d be very proud to see that Charlotte and I are still playing. I’m impressed with Charlotte being able to play so well with her brand new hip! After last night it seems apparent that I might have to get some brand new knees. With our bionics we’d probably play better than we did in high school.

After our tennis date I went home and a storm rolled in. I soaked in a warm bath feeling the endorphins of the evening’s exercise putting a smile on my face.

When the cooler temperatures become downright cold, or when it becomes too dark outside to see a fluorescent green tennis ball, Charlotte and I will pack away our racquets until next summer. For now we’re going to continue to play during these autumn days, enjoying the cooler, colorful evenings and sisterly bonding.

Note to Charlotte:  Sorry about that last phrase, “sisterly bonding.”  It sounds really sappy, but technically that’s what it is.  Plus those people reading this blog post will think we’re like sisters portrayed in a movie; you know those kind who hug each other all the time?  Blog readers really dig that stuff.

As some of you may know Husby and I spent last weekend at the Chateau St. Croix Winery and Vineyard selling my wares at their Fall Festival.  The weather was absolutely perfect and people came to the festival by the thousands.   One of the most fun things to do when at an event like that is people watching.

I saw them from a distance, walking down the grassy aisle toward the music tent.  They were two ladies, same small stature.  They were in their eighties if they were a day and were spiffed up for their outing at the winery.  They both wore slacks (yes, when you’re in your eighties they’re called “slacks”) and identical sequined blouses.  They also sported identical, jet black beehive hairdos, puffed up to make their heads look much too large for their tiny bodies.  If they weren’t twins they were sisters very close in age.  I speculate they never married and still live in the house they in which they grew up.

They paid no attention to my booth, but I think they might have appreciated this ~

You can find this magnet in my Etsy shop in the Word To Live By Magnets section, or check out the sheet magnet tab at the top of this page. You’ll find the Sisters magnet there, along with tons of others.

I wonder which of those two old sisters was the bad one.
