Learn By Example, Or Not

I picked up James Michener’s The Novel because 1) I’ve never read Michener before, and 2) I thought a book about a novel might inspire me.
I found out that 1) Michener is way into detail, which can be kind of distracting, and 2) I’m more resistant in my aspirations to publish than ever because of this story.
When I lie in bed tonight with my eyes going back and forth across The Novel’s pages I’ll wonder what will be the thing that puts me to sleep ~ the book, or the toll my day has taken on me.
If I ever write a book will it put people to sleep? If it’s anything like this post it will.
A Sweet Goodnight

You know my friend Ruthie? The girl half of the couple with whom Husby and I go out on Dive Nights? She holds a tradition of giving me chocolates for a Christmas gift. This year she gave me a very impressive-sized box of truffles.
Ruthie knows I love sweets. What she might not know is that I’m still working on that box of truffles. Oh, they’re almost gone, but I’ve been savoring them for nearly two months.
When I retire for the evening I usually like to read for a little bit. I’m still working on the Harry Potter series; I’ve finally reached the last one, The Deathly Hallows. The other night Husby and I were laying in bed reading our separate books. I surprised him by saying, “chocolate?” and offered him one of the Christmas truffles Ruthie gave me. You see, reading chocolates are darn near the best chocolates you can eat.

A tray of truffles (one of five!) given to me by Ruthie at Christmastime. Such a wonderful accompaniment on my evening journeys to Hogwarts.
Husby was gracious and only ate one of the truffles I offered him, but I could tell he wanted to make chocolate a regular part of his bedtime reading.

See that one in the middle? It’s caramel, my favorite.
Thank you, Ruthie, for a winter of indulgent nights with creamy chocolate. Thank you, JK Rowling, for whisking me away on the Hogwarts Express.
Winter evenings with a good book and some good chocolate…what could be better than that?
Gothic Magic

Over the past few months I’ve been reading the Harry Potter books. They were well-received gifts to Paenney (my nephew) for various occasions when he was younger, so Charlotte has a nice collection of them in Paenney’s section of the bookshelf. Unfortunately the collection stops at Order of the Phoenix, which is the fifth out of seven books. I got a little panicky when I finished the Order of the Phoenix because I knew there would be no more, at least coming from Charlotte’s house. Going to sleep with Hogwarts on my mind had become routine, and everyone knows I loathe a change of routine.
I’ll revisit Hogwarts at some point, but for now I’m revisiting a book I read years ago. About twenty years ago to be more specific. I read it on the beaches of Sanibel Island, Florida during a time where an imaginary escape to New Orleans to meet the Mayfair witches was just the medicine I needed, along with the calming seashore. The book is The Witching Hour by Anne Rice.

My latest indulgence.
Way back then, Anne Rice was the only person I knew of who wrote about things that fascinated me, like vampires and witches, in such a captivating way. Her descriptive powers could put people, houses, and cities in my mind’s eye with incredible detail. I’ve collected a number of her books throughout the years and really love what she wrote throughout the decades of the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s.
So I’m being enraptured all over again with the Mayfair witches. Maybe when I’m finished reading the one thousand plus pages of this book I’ll go back to Hogwarts. Or maybe I’ll choose to stay in New Orleans and select another book from my Anne Rice collection. One thing’s for sure, my reading choices lately are those of extreme imagination. Magic and the preternatural in a gothic setting will get me every time.
To what kind of worlds do you like to fly when you read?
Crispy And Aimless

I’ve been reading a lot lately. I’ve been reading the blogs. I’ve also been reading Odd Thomas, by Dean Koontz. And reading magazines. Reading a lot, but not writing.
I can’t get into a writing groove these days. I can’t even summon up a comment on the blogs I read. Do you call that writer’s block? More likely a lack of motivation to come up with words.
My blog has suffered as has my Etsy shop. I don’t have the creativity to come up with writing descriptions for my new items.
Perhaps I’m in my preparation-for-winter lull. I kind of wither away like the leaves, getting kind of crispy and flurrying around aimlessly in anticipation of winter. Then my mood flourishes in the deadness of the cold and snow.
In my laying invisible and silent, I hope you all had a festive Halloween. We’ve got a little candy left over ~ that’s never a bad thing.
