The other day I was reminded of a song I haven’t heard in a long time. Decades ago when I first heard it I loved the lyrics and seldom used three-quarter time. When I heard it recently I couldn’t get it out of my head for days, which wasn’t a bad thing because it’s such a lovely song.
What’ll I Do was written (or released, I can’t be sure) in 1924 by Irving Berlin and has been recorded by dozens of artists since ~ Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland, and Linda Ronstadt to name a few. It’s a sad song about a failed romance and is usually sung in a dreamy, swoony fashion.
I came across a version of this song that tore my heart out. Not only is the music divine, the artist and video capture the loneliness and melancholy of the song completely. I surprised myself when I chose Willie Nelson’s rendition of What’ll I Do as the best I’d ever heard. What do you think?
Such a great song. I’ve heard it performed by many artists. Thanks for the reminder!
I’m a little ashamed to say that I don’t think I’ve ever heard this song before. I love it!
I’m glad you like it. I’m pretty sure the Professor would like it too (and I see he did on Facebook!). I’ve heard the song done in so many ways but I really liked how old Willie did it.
Not a fan but my husband is, as long as it lifts you or moves you Sara thats all that matters. I get my fix from classical and jazz, although my daughter is making me listen to Taylor Swift in ready for her next concert and actually I am surprised that I like her new album as much as her last one. Trying to stay up with the kids here.
That’s just it – I’m not a fan either! Of Willie Nelson, that is. I was so surprised that his rendition of the song moved me so. The piano is so lovely. Have you ever heard the song done by other artists? Linda Ronstadt did a fabulous job with it, and of course there are the old timers like Sinatra who cover it well too.
I’m glad you’re keeping up with the younger generation because I’m obviously not. You’ll probably be a lot more in touch with the times if you keep up with contemporary music. Me? I’m just stuck in the past thinking “those were the days” like a regular old person. 🙂
I would say you are far from regular my friend.
