Show of hands, how may of you remember this commercial?

Afraid to admit you’re that old?  That’s okay, your secret is safe with me.  Thirty-some years ago Memorex ran commercials claiming you couldn’t tell the difference between a live performance and a recording on one of their tapes.  Great marketing, but really, is anything better than the real thing?

I was doing some research the other day and came across some things that kind of disturbed me. Not that I didn’t know these things existed before now, but I never really gave them a second thought before my research.

So, in the spirit of Memorex cassette tapes I’ll ask you, which are real candles?

Similarly, which is the real bottle cap?

Plastic candles? Chrome bottle caps? You can totally tell which is real and which is fake. Why would you buy fake when the real thing is so much better, and so much more…real?

I’m sure people have their reasons for going fake, but at Auntie B’s Wax I make candles out of real wax and drink charms and magnets made with real bottle caps.

Who drank the Haterade?!  Hatey McHaterson, that’s who!

There’s no reason to feel so poorly, Mr. McHaterson.  Oh, I know you don’t think you’re “poorly,” but really you are.  You wouldn’t be so Hatey if you weren’t poorly.

You scowl at people in the elevator and you shake your fist at drivers on the highway.  You roll your eyes when people talk to you and huff and puff when you think you’re smarter than anyone in the whole, wide world.

Why can’t you be more like your neighbor, Shouting Guy?  Sure he shouts, but he’s so good-natured no one cares if he rattles the rafters or startles children right out of their wits.  He loves everyone, and everyone loves him.

Alas, Hatey McHaterson is perfectly happy being Hatey.  Oh well, he must be doing something right if he’s famous enough to have his picture on a bottle cap magnet in Auntie B’s shop.

Confession: Reality TV does nothing for me.  I mean the kind of reality TV that matches millionaires with “regular” people, focuses on “real” housewives, or presents competitions to find the next singing sensation.  I don’t have time to get caught up in the drama, and frankly, I think watching people beg for fame by exploiting their “real” lives is not entertaining to me.  When I want entertainment I turn to movies.

In the midst of my day-to-day life I occasionally want to just escape. What better way to do that than to lose myself in a story on the big screen, or with a DVD on the little screen for that matter?  I can get the whole story in less than three hours, which is just about the amount of time I have to spare.

For lots of people (maybe you?) the Academy Awards is the only reality TV that makes any sense.  Every year when this awards ceremony rolls around I can’t help but think about the glamor of old Hollywood.  Can anyone today really come close to the dashing Cary Grant?  Is anyone as elegant and beautiful as Grace Kelly?

If you like to throw an annual Academy Awards party, I have something that will make your event a smash.  Charm your guests with Auntie B’s Wax’s Movie Stars drink charms.  They’re perfect for the theme of your party and pay homage to the golden age of Hollywood.  Sip your wine or cocktails with the dazzling stars that made Hollywood great.  When your guests aren’t talking about the current nominees, they’ll look to their charms and reminisce.  There’s no way your party can miss!

You can find these charms and others at Auntie B’s Wax.  Easier still, just click on the pictures.

Appreciation

You’ve all probably got various parties and celebrations you’re attending this Christmas season.  Things are no different for me.  The weeks leading up to Christmas are a flurry of activities with shopping, baking, decorating, and socializing.  In fact, the partying continues even after Christmas at my house.  Today my family will be joining me and Husby for some holiday cheer and cozy chatter in front of the fireplace.

And a new year is right around the corner.  The flip of a calendar page can inspire better intentions and habits as well as reflection on the past year, what it has meant and how it has affected us.  One thing I like to reflect on is all of the good things bestowed upon me throughout the previous year, giving silent thanks for events and people who have encouraged me, taught me, inspired me, and just plain loved me.

Did I say “silent thanks?”  Well, for the most part, yes.  But this year I decided, as owner and CEO of Auntie B’s Wax, to express my gratitude to my roadie, tax man, and support staff with a special dinner.

Lucky for my funds all of those positions are held by one person, Husby.  The company treated for a nice dinner for just the two of us.  We enjoyed delicious food and refreshing libations while we chatted about our day, our lives together, and the future of Auntie B’s Wax.  I also expressed great thanks to my one and only employee, who works for nothing, for helping me grow a business.

Employee appreciation dinner will become a new tradition at Auntie B’s Wax.  Whether I have one employee who works for nothing or ten employees with salaries the company will treat for a year-end dinner.  I think that’s a capital idea and well-deserved to those he who helps make it all possible.

I’d also like to express appreciation to all of you who have supported my business with your purchases and encouragement.  Please help yourself to 15% off your entire purchase (excluding shipping) in my Etsy shop through January 13, 2012.  Just enter the coupon code THANKS when making your purchase.  You deserve it, because you are all so dang awesome!
