Do you love the smell of leather?  When I go to the Minnesota State Fair I visit the Funk and Rose Leather trading post to get some deep breaths full of that rustic, earthy scent.  When I wear my grandma’s vintage leather gloves I have a hard time keeping my hands away from my face to get a noseful of the aroma.  If my car had a leather interior I’d probably decide to live in it rather than my house.

I’ve got a candle at the shop that has a very true leather scent.  If you love the smell of leather as much as I do, this is the candle for you.

Icicles

The snow keeps coming here in Minnesota, but because it’s March it’s kind of melty.  With melty snow comes icicles.  I know, icicles aren’t desireable to a lot of home owners, but I think they’re one of the prettiest occurances nature gives.

Are You Making Popovers?

The plan was to make some clam and pasta soup for dinner.  There was also a plan for snow and slippery roads.  I wondered what I could do instead of going to the store to buy some bread sticks or ciabatta rolls to go with the soup.  Make popovers, of course!

Lots of people think popovers are difficult and complicated.  Guess what?  There are only four ingredients and chances are better than good you have them all in your house right now.  Eggs, milk, flour and salt.  Who would guess these four ingredients would make such a delicious accompaniment to a winter evening soup?  The best thing about popovers is that everyone thinks they’re really fancy ~ only you’ll know they’re the easiest thing you could ever make from scratch.  I love them hot out of the oven with some a substantial amount of butter on them.

I make them in popover tins, but you can use custard cups or even muffin tins.

I use a basic recipe from Betty Crocker.  The recipe offered online is the same as it is in my cookbook, which is about thirty years old.  The classics last forever.

From The Recesses

Nostalgia. Sometimes I think I’d rather live in the past instead of now, but then I think of Norma Desmond on Sunset Boulevard and how living in the past isn’t such a good idea after all.

I can’t help feeling nostalgic when I hear music from my past. I was sitting at the table working on my bottle cap magnets and Husby sat down at the computer and started playing around on YouTube. He was finding all sorts of songs from the ’70s and ’80s and playing them for me while I worked. After a few of his favorites he started taking requests. Out of the recesses of my mind came a tune and I blurted out, “Stephen Bishop, On And On.” I forgot all about that song until that moment; funny what feeling nostalgic makes you remember.

Now the song is stuck in my head. That’s not a bad thing because 1) I loved the song when it first came out and 2) now that it’s unburied I love it again. Do you remember On And On? If so, here’s your blast from the past.
