Man…don’t you hate it when this happens?

There’s a full moon tonight. There’s a tree standing in the corner of the room waiting to be adorned with lights and ornaments and other assorted sparkly things. There’s a pantry full of baking ingredients and a freezer full of butter ready to be turned into cookies and other goodies. There are Christmas songs floating through my head getting me in the mood to turn my house into a winter wonderland. There’s a cabinet full of Christmas movies waiting to be watched for the bazillionth time.
Did I say there’s a full moon tonight? Yes, and some deer meandering through neighboring yards looking for something to eat. It’s all practically magical. This is the Christmas season.

OK, it’s confession time. I’m about to say something that might cause quite a stir. Today I’m going to admit to the entire universe that…
I AM THE SCROOGE OF HALLOWEEN
That’s right, I’m just not into it. I talked to my friend MaryAnn today and told her about my aversion to Halloween and she simply couldn’t believe it. “I thought you loved Halloween,” she said. I told her that might have been the case in the past, but these days not so much.
I really want Halloween to be my favorite holiday. I want to get into the spirit of things (no pun intended), but it’s not in me.
I’d love to make beautiful and scary Halloween treats…

So cute, but so not high on my list of priorities.
I’d love to have an eerie ambiance in my house…

So my style, but so not worth the effort.
I’d like to project an enthusiasm for the season outdoors and give the trick-or-treaters something to be wary of…

These would look so cool hanging from the tree in my front yard. Not gonna happen.
It would be cool if I could give myself a zipper face…

How much would this scare the living daylights out of the kids?
The thing is, as much as I want to put on a show for Halloween it just doesn’t seem worth it for me. I don’t want to bake. I don’t want to decorate. I don’t want to dress up. I don’t want to answer the doorbell every three minutes and hand out candy to little beggars.
I know! I’m the Halloween Scrooge! I’m ashamed to admit it, but it’s true.
The perfect Halloween for me would be if I were the one indulging in chocolate instead of giving it out to other people. It would be complete bliss if I could spend the night with a really scary movie (not slasher) or to read some Poe in a dimly lit room with ambient music playing softly in the background. Or maybe burn a single taper candle and fool around with a Ouija board.

So mystical.
I wish the spirits of All Hallows Eve would give the commercialized celebrators a run for their money, floating and moaning in the night air for all to see, forcing trick-or-treaters into their homes to huddle in the corner with fear in their eyes.
See? That’s me, the Halloween Scrooge.

February 2nd is Groundhog Day. Every year. It rolls around like Halloween, Christmas, birthdays…same date every year. And every year I forget about it.
Husby never forgets it though, and for the past very many years he has given me a card to mark the “holiday.” This is what I woke up to this morning:

The best thing about the Groundhog Day cards from Husby is that they’re handmade. He does the artwork and the touching sentiments. I was stunned to see a 3D card this year.

What’s more exciting than a 3D groundhog made by your husband?!
I can just picture him, sitting in his office, cutting out and putting together a paper groundhog, and thinking up a springtime verse to go with him.

What a poet!
I was feeling a little blue the past couple of days, but finding this fun Groundhog Day sentiment waiting for me first thing in the morning cheered me up a lot. I’m glad I forget about Groundhog Day because the card is that much more meaningful and fun when I don’t expect it.

In my part of the world I’m pretty sure the groundhog saw his shadow; it’s a bright, sunny day in Minnesota. Happy Groundhog Day everyone, and may your springtime be right around the corner.

Happy New Year!
Oh, leave me alone. I know I’m over a week behind in declaring “happy new year,” but it seems it hasn’t really started for me yet. How can that be, you ask? Well let me tell you.
Husby and I hosted Ruthie and Ray for the holiday edition of Dive Night, but not until January 3rd. And because the twelve days of Christmas are after Christmas Day (much to the confusion of many) we were still in Christmas mode after the new year. I wish I could give you a full dive night report but we were feeling so festive I didn’t take as many pictures as I should have. Our heavy appetizer pot luck was done in shifts, and unfortunately anything after the first shift didn’t get a picture. We had shrimp cocktail, meats and cheeses, pickled herring, artichoke dip, taco dip, the most delicious mini weenies wrapped in bacon and baked in a brown sugar glaze, mushroom tartlets, reuben spirals, cinnamon almonds, veggies and dip, and assorted cookies. If I forgot anything check the comments as Ruthie might add what my middle-aged mind forgot.

Ruthie’s signature taco dip.

Artichoke-Gorgonzola Dip

Succulent shrimp with mouth-watering cocktail sauce.

Assortment of dipping crackers and chips.
We also had champagne, wine and assorted beers. A fine time was had by all.
One night this week I made some really good seafood puff pastry things, but then I got sick. Husby said he felt fine, so I guess I can’t blame my cooking. But my stomach churned more than I would have liked and I stayed home from work the next day. And the day after! The thing is, all of the Christmas decorations were still up (except the tree, which came down on Sunday) so it felt like Christmas until today. Despite my sick day off work I managed to gather and pack up the decorations so once again the house looks like the house and not Santa’s castle at the North Pole.
Tomorrow I’ll be back at the day job. I’m not looking forward to it, but I’m glad I’m feeling well enough to go. Tonight I’m going to relax and try to get used to 2014.
So, again I say Happy New Year. I hope it’s going well for everyone so far.
