On The Road Again

It’s time to hit the road.  A familiar road, yes, but always exciting.  It leads to cold water and warm breezes, friendly faces, and best of all, locally made wine.

I’ll leave the wretched day job behind me and look out to the sunset, toasting all that is good in my life.  Cheers.

It was an awful day. The kind of day Mondays are made of. The weather was hot and humid, which did a number on my hair. No amount of conditioner and “curl enhancing lotion” would keep it down. Oh, it was curly instead of frizzy but before long the curls started standing up, making me look like the Screaming Banshee.

Then our card keys ceased to perform their duties. I had to pee something fierce, but didn’t want to be locked out of the office. Of course security is so tight around here the idea of propping the door open until the problem was fixed was preposterous.

The card key situation was fixed relatively quickly, but then I found out the air conditioning wasn’t working on our floor of the building. What are the chances of it working on all other floors but mine? Hot outside, hot inside. And I had a long-sleeved top on because when the air conditioning is on it’s usually a frigid 60 degrees or so.

The hellfire that was my office.

And because there was no air conditioning, there was no air, period.  And the humidity began to creep in, making my hair stand up even more.  The wet air also caused all business papers to curl beyond recognition.

As I sat sweating in my chair trying to look business-like my left eye developed what appeared to be TV snow. I was pretty sure I was having a stroke, but it turned out to be merely a migraine. Hot, big hair, and now a splitting headache. Such a lovely day at the office.

Not Wigbert. I don’t post pictures of pets I know to protect them from petophiles.

The day ended okay though.  When I got home I took some pain meds for my headache and got right to work doing some laundry and ironing.  I know!  Ironing?!  Who does that anymore?  Then our nephew Fojo came over to pick up his beloved hamster Wigbert, for whom we had been pet-sitting for the past five days.  Fojo told us all sorts of stories about the fabulous fishing trip he had taken while we got to know Wigbert for a week.

All’s well that ends well.  Today things are back to normal.  My hair is curly, but not on end and my head hasn’t throbbed once.  The papers are less curly and easier to handle I can use my card key at will..  The icy drafts of resumed air conditioning are causing my fingers to stiffen once again.

Not me, but she has the right idea.

What will the rest of the week bring?

Yesterday I felt really frumpy.  I tried to look cute in the outfit I chose for the day job, but I looked anything but cute.  I had a little short-sleeved top, a soft, cropped cardigan, and some Lee pants.  Doesn’t sound so bad, right?  Wrong.  Because there was the very unfortunate combination of colors.  The pants were light, sandy brown, the top was orange, and the sweater was olive green.  That’s right, I was dressed like a house out of the ’70s.

My top was the color of the cabinets and my sweater was the color of the appliances. My pants were the color of that tiny strip of border above the window. I was a ’70s kitchen.

I was self-conscious all day and tried not to leave my desk unless it was absolutely necessary so as few people as possible would see me.

Although I was wearing the color scheme of this dreadful livingroom, I’m grateful my hair didn’t look like shag carpeting.

The more the day dragged on the more stupid I felt in my weird ensemble.  I’ll never use that combination of clothes again.  When I got home I quickly changed into a pair of sweat pants and a denim work shirt and thought I would have looked better wearing that to work.

Burnt orange and avocado green.  Take my advice and don’t do it, unless you’re able to spend the day hiding from view of the general public.

I would have looked better had I been wearing this woman’s outfit. Except I would never stand with my legs apart like that. That one looks kind of broken.

Today I’m wearing a black skirt and a black blouse.  I like the svelte look.  Much better than looking like a big, green refrigerator.

Rainy And Loving It

I’m sitting in my rumpus room as I write this, watching a storm roll in while the aroma of a freshly cut bunch of lilacs fills the room.  I spent the whole day picking up the house and doing some dusting and vacuuming.  It felt really good to be wholly domestic for a change.  If only I could have mustered up the motivation to cook a gourmet meal for Husby.  Alas, we had a frozen pizza.  Delicious, of course, but definitely not gourmet.  Husby spent a good portion of the day doing yard work.  It’s hard to get a lot done when there’s rain every day, but this morning the skies were clear so the grass was mowed, some flowers were planted, and hostas were split and distributed.

This weekend we’re going to a high school graduation party to help our little (6’7″) nephew, Fojo, celebrate his grand accomplishment.  I’ll also be getting busy getting ready for the Chateau St. Croix Fete des Fleurs next weekend.  I can hardly wait to have a sip of wine with the gang again.

For now I’m going to snug in and read in bed between fresh sheets while the rain spashes against the windows.

I hope everyone has a great weekend.

I’ve been going full steam ahead this month, as May is the most busy and event-filled month of my year.  Or so it seems.  I’m here to tell you have I nothing to tell you.  My days are filled with the day job, my evenings filled with things like melting wax, pressing bottle caps, and printing price tags.  That’s about it.

Every weekend of this month has something going on.  First there was Husby’s birthday, and then Mother’s Day, both celebrating wonderful people in my life.  This coming weekend is my first show of the year and the weekend after that is Memorial Day weekend, when I’ll be going to the family cottage (as will the majority of my family) for some hard labor and rest and relaxation.

There is a graduation party in the near future as my nephew Fojo has successfully completed all of the requirements for a high school diploma.  Yay!  Then my mom will be celebrating her birthday and there will be more craft shows.  By that time it will be July.

Everyone always has something going on the weekend of the 4th, no?  I might make another trip to the family cottage where it’s possible we’ll celebrate my nephew Paenney’s twenty-first birthday.  Twenty-one!  The years are moving more swiftly than ever, and the months even swifter.  Another craft show, some more birthdays, and before I know it the Minnesota State Fair will be upon us.  And everyone knows the Minnesota State Fair is the last hurrah of the summer.

They say we should live in the moment.  Right now I have an entire summer ahead of me and from what I can tell there will be not one moment that isn’t occupied with something or other.  Once May is done, the busiest and craziest month of my year (causing my head to spin in several different directions), perhaps I’ll be able to pause to take a photo or two.  Maybe I’ll be able to take my laptop out on the back deck and clearly document what’s going on in the life of my business and of me.  I might be able to relish “the moment.”

For now I anticipate and prepare for moments to come…crazily.
