Day 7: A Song To Drive To

It was a warm summer night. Cruising the streets of Minneapolis, on the back of a motorcycle driven by a guy I never would have guessed would want to be with me.  We stopped at an intersection. He reached back and gave my thigh a stroke. I’ll never forget that. I love this song blaring with the windows open while I drive, feeling wild and free.

I used to go out dancing a lot in my 20s. First Avenue was my danceteria of choice. Yes, that First Avenue, the one that got famous with Prince.  I loved that place back in the ’80s, and I was totally rockin’ it. Except I couldn’t dance. I was no good at it. Of course I didn’t realize it at the time, but c’est la vie, YOLO.  It was a blast.

I still like to move to the music, but mostly I’m alone when I’m doing the moving. As I’m older I rock out to stuff I hear, but one song that makes me think of myself and dancing is of course, Dancing With Myself. I’m sure everyone is happy that I’m happy dancing with myself, because I’m a terrible dance partner. I’d most likely embarrass anyone I’m dancing with, and am oblivious to the fool I make of myself.  Win win for everyone!

Eight years of my life. I packed his stupid albums up and shipped them to Montana, where surely he has since died.  No love lost, but nightmares persist.

I remember a boy I met in high school. He was a year older than me. Man, I liked that boy. He was tall and handsome, great sense of humor, and wore a cozy down jacket in the wintertime. I found out he liked me too. Alas, our romance was never to be realized. This song reminds me of that era and that boy, and summertimes spent during the age of innocence.
