I might as well just admit it ~ I don’t take time to read as much as I’d like to. This winter I started a book. I was so excited, as it was from one of my favorite authors, in one of my favorite genres…scary.

Horror Story at Auntie B's Wax

Having had three pretty serious colds this winter, I thought a good book would be quite soothing.  With a box of Kleneex by my side, my fleecy blanket keeping me warm I started on what I thought would be a perfect escape from focusing on my plugged up nose and watery eyes. I read. I read some more. I became increasingly confused and completely disengaged in the story. What had become of my author? Could it be she stopped writing fiction and began pouring her own issues into that of her characters? Tres boring! Vague and erroneous titles were given to people, events, and yes, even trees put me off most of all. I had no idea what was going on.

I tried and tried for several nights to continue the story, hoping it would get better, hoping it would engage me.  I put it down for a week and went back to it.  It didn’t become any more clear, it continued to irritate me, and worst of all, it wasn’t scary at all.

The book is on my bedside table with the bookmark removed. I couldn’t bear to go on with it.

I’m disappointed with my former “favorite” author and wish she could get off her high horse and write like she used to when she lived in the Garden District. Luckily I kept some of my favorites from her, written back in the day when she had more imagination and less issues.

My third (and hopefully final) cold of the season has waned, but I’m still going to try to read. I want a story to take me away from the pressures of the day. I want something that keeps me interested, entertained, intrigued. Charlotte not only recommended one, but also lent it to me. It’s not scary, but she said it’s a page-turner, so that’s where my reading adventures will go next.  Charlotte always knows the good books.

Have you had time to read a book lately? What’s your favorite? Do you have any suggestions for me?

The morning was darker than most, the air was thick with moist fog.  My twenty-minute drive to work began.  As I drove along the winding road through the swamp area by my house, the headlights piercing the heavy mist, my mind’s eye began to work, taking me back to a time in my imagination.

I sat on a weathered bench on the shore of the vast lake. Not a soul had wakened, it was only me and the seagulls. The water was still, at least more still than usual, except for the occasional ripple caused by a diving gull. The fog was heavy and gathered on my jacket.

As I sat alone in silence I could see the ghosts rise from the water, the lonely souls who made their living on the unforgiving water.  They loved the sea, and the sea loved them enough to keep them in its midst forever.

The fog plays mysterious tricks on my mind, and as the ghosts rose so did they descend back into the blackness of the water.  Off in the distance shines the pinpoint of warning from the lighthouse, and the desolate cry of the foghorn.

Last week I talked about my fantasy shop, or at least one of my fantasy shops. There are many floating around in my mind, each catering to a different market. It’s fun to imagine these shops, which would most like be located in touristy areas. Except when I fantasize about having a brick and mortar shop (or many) I forget sometimes that I have an actual shop to which I must attend. That would be my little space on Etsy.

If you’ve never been to visit I’d love to see your tally on my stats page. Oh, I know that sounds horribly impersonal, but believe me, when I see those little tallies I know they represent actual people. Sometimes it’s fun to imagine what those people are like, depending on what they’re looking at. Yes, I see you looking at specific items, and I love you for it!

I have lots of lovely candles for your visual and aromatic enjoyment. They come in a variety of colors and scents and are made of paraffin or palm wax. The ever-popular beeswax candles are on their way to my shop this year. As much as I like palm wax and paraffin, beeswax is my favorite. I think the reason they haven’t gotten into the shop yet is because I burn them all myself before they get there.

I have a variety of cute, nostalgic, funny and bizarre bottle cap magnets. There are lots in the shop right now, and so many more to come.

That’s just a little sample of what’s in my real shop. I hope you’ll stop by sometime and come back often to see what’s new. Your tallied presence is what drives me be more productive and to add things to the shop more frequently. You are my reason for existing as Auntie B.

If you have any ideas of things you’d like to see in my shop just let me know in the comments below.
