I don’t know about you, but if someone offers me a Twinkie I will not refuse it, and I usually can’t stop at one.  You know Twinkies…”golden sponge cake with creamy filling.”  Remember back in the ’70s when Ann Blyth was the spokesperson for Hostess?  She gave Twinkies and Ding Dongs a little class.  The only problem with the commercial is the kids – they eat like cavemen.  Luckily Ann makes up for it with her groovy hairdo.

But this isn’t about Ann Blyth or the Twinkies of the ’70s. This is about a new way with Twinkies. The 21st Century Twinkies. I got this recipe out of The Twinkies Cookbook.  My pictures don’t look as appetizing at the one in the cookbook, but trust me, this dessert is divine.

Slice ten Twinkies lengthwise and stuff them tight into a 9X13 pan.

Mix 8 oz cream cheese with a 14-oz can of sweetened condensed milk. Spread over the Twinkies.

Spoon a large can of cherry pie filling over the cheese/milk mixture. If you want to be extra fancy (which I'm not) save some of the cherry filling to spoon on the top of the dessert to make it look really pretty.

Drain a large can of crushed pineapple and spoon evenly over the pie filling.

Spread an 8-oz tub of Cool Whip over everything. Be sure to make those attractive swirls on top, especially if you aren't garnishing with the reserved cherries.

After you cover and refrigerate for at least four hours (I refrigerated it overnight) be sure you have lots of people over to enjoy it. The cream cheese and sweetened condensed milk kind of soak into the Twinkies, but don’t make them soggy. The cherries and pineapple are a combination from paradise. And seriously, could you find an easier recipe?

I’m always looking for easy but delicious recipes. I’d love to hear what you’re cooking up, or just throwing together. What sweets are you serving this weekend?

By now everyone’s heard the news that Davy Jones, age 66, has died.

Are you kidding me?!

I’ve always been a Monkees fan.  I remember, when I was just a young girl in the late ’60s, seeing a commercial on TV advertising a Monkees double album set.  I knew I had to have it.  I also knew my mother would never approve of spending that much money on record albums much less through the mail.  So secretly I met with Charlotte and we gathered enough of our little savings and mailed CASH through the mail to receive our Monkees records.  I wonder if those records are still somewhere in my mom and dad’s house?  If they are I know they have a lot of wear as Charlotte and I listened to them a lot.  I also know you cannot stop a starry-eyed, pre-teen girl from having her heart’s desire, so sneaking behind my mom’s back to get the albums was definitely forgivable.

Davy Jones.  Boy he was a heart-throb, huh?  Yep, I thought he was pretty groovy, but I wasn’t the only one.  Marsha Brady was way more in love with him than I ever was.  She promised her entire school that he would be at her prom because he responded to her fan mail!  I thought that episode of The Brady Bunch, where Davy Jones makes an appearance, was just about the coolest.  I saw that episode on a rerun not too long ago.  (Yes, I will watch The Brady Bunch whenever I can because they’re just so, well, far-out!)  I noticed this time around that Davy’s manager in the show was completely head-over-heels for Davy, giving him dreamy eyes and everything.  He even got a little jealous when Marsha came in to the recording studio and kicked her out, knowing that Davy would give his affections to her if he caught a glimpse.  Tres funny!

Well that just goes to show Davy Jones was a dreamboat to everyone.  True, he died before any of us were ready for it, but he left behind many a fluttering heart and a small contribution to the music world.  RIP, Davy.  You made me a believer.

P.S.  If this post got you thinking about the Brady Bunch, be sure to check out the ultra groovy Brady Bunch drink charms available in my shop.

Boy, what a season I’m having! Things are buzzing at the Auntie B’s Wax World Headquarters with Christmas preparations, events, entertaining, and general festivities.

I’ve been so happy with the support I’ve been getting with my little business too ~ gratitude doesn’t begin to express how I feel these days.  The fun part about selling my wares this time of year is knowing some of them will be given as Christmas gifts.  That makes me feel just like one of Santa’s elves.

What’s going on in your part of the world these days? Baking? Shopping? Wrapping? Bah-Humbugging? I hope you’re not doing that last thing ~ unless you decide to have a great epiphany as a result of being visited by three spirits. Then you can Bah-Humbug all you want until Christmas Day. Better yet, get into that baking, shopping, and wrapping and you won’t have time to Bah-Humbug. And you’ll probably have that little song in your head: “Ho ho ho, ho ho ho, we are Santa’s elves…”

Old World Charm

There is a shop nearby, open by appointment only eleven months of the year.  During the Christmas season the doors are open and welcome us all.  Come in and see how Nakashian-O’Neil celebrates this time of year.

A magnificent tree shines with old world ornaments.  Shimmering glitter, crystal clear glass, Santas, angels, stars, and icicles.  It’s hard to gaze upon it without childlike wonder.

The shop is as old as the antiques it sells, as are the proprietors. Music piped through the store is anything from Ethel Merman to century-old French Christmas music.  Cracked plaster, dark wood and architectural details make this a most charming and nostalgic place.  I imagine if this were my shop I would never want to leave it.

Christmastime at Nakashian-O’Neil is a treat indeed.  Take it in, and take something home ~ you’ll surely find something you like, if only a souvenir of your visit.

Nakashian-O’Neil is located at 23 West 6th Street, St. Paul, MN and is open to the public without appointment through Christmas.
